What Comes After an Intervention?
There are two possible outcomes after an intervention. The first one is that the person will understand how destructive their actions are to themselves and to their family members, loved ones, close friends and even business associates, and decide to enter a treatment facility. The second outcome is that the addict will refuse to enter rehab, ignoring all the facts that even a blind person could see. You have to remember in this case that you are not talking to the person; you are talking to the drug. Don’t give up hope. In this case, you just have to keep trying. Keep loving. Stop enabling. Try again.
In the first case, when your loved one decides to enter treatment, this is just the first step in the treatment process. Depending on the severity of the diagnosis, the addict will be in treatment for a minimum of 30 days, and this could be even 60 to 90 days before the treatment staff believes the addict is ready for the next step. An important part of the rehab program will involve you. You need to have an understanding of the addiction cycle. You need to know how you have been enabling the addict. You need to know how to help the addict once they leave rehab. Our drug rehab center has a program to help families and loved ones understand all of this. Just remember, rehab is not just for the addict; it is also for you.
In the case where the addict is not ready to make a change, the intervention will help you know what to do and what not to do in the future. You have likely been enabling the addict, not intentionally, but because of your love and concern. In the intervention you will help the addict understand that you and others will no longer enable the addict. They will come to know that things won’t be the same. They can continue to use, but they will not get the help from you as they have in the past. It is critical for you to understand all of this from the intervention. A trained interventionist will guide you through this process, so that in the end, if your loved one decides to not enter treatment, the rest of the addict’s loved ones will have a plan to follow that does not include enabling.
