How Addiction Centers Help Drug and Alcohol Addicts

Addiction centers is a term generally used for residential drug & alcohol rehab facilities. They are places where an addict with drug and alcohol problems would be admitted for a period of full time residency, where treatment, therapy and rehabilitation are done throughout the recovery process.

There are many different kinds of addiction centers. Some offer gender specific programs, others specialize with the combination of addiction with other disorders like depression. There are even some addiction centers that are religiously oriented to help the addict.

Rehabilitation Centers usually have scheduled daily activities to help drug and alcohol addicts with their recovery.

  • Group therapy
  • Individual counseling
  • Exercise
  • Lectures
  • Courses
  • Recreation
  • Even the person’s own quiet time

It is through these different activities that addiction centers help by educating recovering addicts on how to deal with the issues that led them to drug and alcohol abuse as well as teaching them ways on how to avoid relapsing.

But just because you’ve managed to get yourself into an addiction center doesn’t mean that it will work for you. It is critically important for an individual’s success to find the right kind of treatment center. There are lots of addiction centers out there but not all of them fit an individual’s certain needs.

An addict’s recovery is also dependent on the length of stay in rehab. The time may vary anywhere from weeks to many months, depending on the level of care the addiction center provides.

  • Health insurance plays a part in this as the length of stay in addiction centers may vary on how long the health insurance company feels an addict needs to stay (unfortunately this feeling is often based more on the amount of money available than the actual need of the addict).
  • There are centers that are designed specifically for extended care and usually have a maximum stay of 90 days.
  • There are also addiction facilities where the recovering addict can stay as long as it takes (Over 3 months if needed) and get all the help necessary for a successful recovery.

The intake personnel of the centers should be asked about their philosophy. Addiction centers have different approaches. It is important to find one with a program the addict can develop confidence in. The most important factor in an individual’s success and positive experience inside a rehab center and his or her  recovery from addiction,  is the person’s full cooperation with the addiction center’s program.

Apart from providing individuals with treatment, some facilities also offer courses to help the recovering addict to learn life skill tools to prevent relapsing. Substance abuse counselors even help addicts rebuild their lives by helping them reconnect with loved ones and gain job opportunities.
