Substance Abuse Facts

The Number OneFact about Substance Abuse? It does exist.

Though at first, people deny it, substance abuse is real and not only affects the user but family, friends, co-workers, even strangers. It affects relationships, careers, grades, finances and health.

A quarter of the deaths in the U.S. can be attributed to substance abuse through alcohol and the use of illicit drugs. These deaths can be overdoses, health problems the user has succumbed to due to a substance abuse problem or accidental death as the direct result of substance abuse.

Relationships end every day because someone cannot deal with a spouse or significant other’s drug or alcohol use. Most domestic violence situations are linked to drug or alcohol use. Children are taken away when their lives are endangered by a parent who has been found to be involved heavily with drugs or alcohol.
Tempers flare when alcohol and drugs are used and crime can occur.

A person can have an outstanding career such as being a physician or lawyer. Addiction does not discriminate and those in high-stress jobs can end up with substance abuse problems just as easily as someone making minimum wage. Many times, a person has filed bankruptcy because an addiction has wiped out family finances. Once a person is addicted, the important thing is having the money for the next fix or bottle of vodka, not whether the mortgage is paid or there is food in the fridge.

Teens can begin drinking and soon find themselves with their grades slipping. College freshmen are also known to have this happen when living away from home for the first time and having a taste of freedom that leads them to experience alcohol and drugs they may not have used at home.

Every day, lives are destroyed by drunk driving. These accidents are considered homicides in many states because a person has made a choice that could lead directly to another person’s death if he drinks and drives. Drugs and alcohol can damage the brain, the liver, a person’s heart, the kidneys.

* Crime is a substance abuse fact.

Armed robberies are acts of desperation a lot of times because a person’s needs the money to get his next fix. Tempers flare when alcohol and drugs are used and a person can assault, even murder another person. Acts are committed by someone who perhaps would have never done anything of the sort if not for the substance abuse problem that he has.

The Number One Fact is that Substance Abuse exists. The number two Fact ? There IS HELP available. Call a Drug Rehab Center today and let them help you get back on the right road.
